Feb. 2009

In Australia, the wildfires have been burning out of control. As always happens in such situations, the lives of animals are threatened. Please click the photos below from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to see what you can do to help, no matter where you live.

URGENT FROM spcaLA

NOV. 2009

It's fire season in California, extended from the usual summertime conflagrations. And as always happens, pets and wildlife are hard hit. Fire fighters are doing a wonderful job, but Santa Ana winds have not played fair, helping to spread blazes. When such disasters hit, the spca-LA and Humane Society, plus some other super organizations, quickly dispatch DART teams to help the animals in distress. These groups do heroic work, but could use help funding the enormous task. Click the fire to find out more.

SEPT. 2008

Once again, the hurricane season has hit the Gulf, this time causing havoc mainly in Texas, so far, with Hurricane Ike. The SPCA-LA and other organizations below have come onto the scene to help, and your donations will enable them or other agencies listed to be able to carry on their important work to help stranded and confused animals left in the wake of the floods and winds. Please read on to see what you can do. You can also check the spcaLA website for updates. And do please pay attention to their call to arm yourself for emergencies, for you and your pets. We also have a page outlining what you can do to prepare. Please click the link below for a printable version.

SpcaLA, one of only 8 humane agencies permitted to enter Galveston, made 70 search-and-rescue attempts in the past two days.  In fact, our Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) went out again this morning for another full day.  Since arriving, DART has assisted countless dogs and cats, 5 ducks, 3 geese, 3 pet birds, 3 prairie dogs and a hedgehog!

To donate to spcaLA, please click here or call (323) 730-5300, x232.  spcaLA is in DESPERATE need of cat litter to replenish what was taken to the rescue efforts.  For a listing of spcaLA locations, and their hours, where donations of litter can be made, please click here.

spcaLA is one of eight humane organizations that make up the Texas State Animal Resource Team.  Other team members include Houston SPCA, Denver Dumb Friends League, Code 3 Associates, Humane Society of Pike's Peak Region, SPCA of Texas, Humane Society of Missouri and the Louisiana SPCA.

Members of the Texas State Animal Resource Team are the ONLY humane organizations credentialed to operate and provide rescue in the areas of Texas hit by Hurricane Ike.  Please be sure an organization is on the Texas State Animal Resource Team before you choose to donate to them.

OCT. 2007

OCT . 22: Right now it's about the Santa Ana winds in Southern California, and the huge wild fires too big to contain. This is a problem throughout the western states, as our climate has grown warmer and fires larger, according to fire fighters interviewed
Oct. 21.
UPDATE OCT. 26 -- The fires have been contained in many areas. However, damage has already been done in terms of displaced and injured pets and wildlife. And fire officials warn of more fires to come, to be followed by mudslides.
Who said California doesn't have seasons?
There are fire, drought, mudslide and earthquake...

spcaLA's DART Dispatched to Texas

spcaLA’s Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) has been dispatched to Texas to assist with relief efforts at the request of Houston SPCA.   The four-unit caravan will be leaving on Saturday morning with the final destination of Beaumont, Texas.  The team will provide urgent frontline care, food, temporary shelter and rescue to the animals affected by Hurricane Rita.

spcaLA’s DART has been on standby to assist with the Southern California fires but due to Los Angeles City Animal Control’s prompt and effective response, DART’s help was not required.

DART Hurricane Katrina Steve During the previous response to Hurricane Katrina several of DART’s vital equipment was damaged including a vehicle and an RV.  The loss of the RV was very significant as it allows DART the ability to set up mobile staging areas.  spcaLA has rented an RV for this effort but needs its own RV for future rescue and relief operations.

Donations to our DART will be accepted online, by telephone, or in person at our facilities. Please specify on your check or in the comments section of the online donation that your contribution is for “disaster relief.”

If you cannot make a monetary contribution, spcaLA is also in dire need of several items. The requirements of rescue work change daily, as does the need to replenish supplies.  We will continue to update this list as necessary.
